A Primer on OBM Research for ABA Organizations: Opportunities, Considerations, and Suggestions for Effective Research

While many practicing behavior analysts indicate that they would like to engage in research, there remain multiple barriers to service delivery organizations developing a functional research program. In addition to clinical research, ABA services have a unique opportunity to also bridge this gap with research in organizational behavior management (OBM). OBM applies behavior principles to organizations and their constituents. Research in this area has a long history of efficacy in human service organizations. However, there are many considerations to account for when running OBM research, many of which may differ from projects targeting clinical outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to outline guidance for running OBM research in ABA service delivery organizations. Some benefits of an OBM research program are described, as well as important considerations pertaining to organizational needs, provision of adequate resources, research infrastructure and teams. Unique ethical considerations when conducting OBM research in ABA settings are discussed, such as client welfare, employee voluntariness, and intellectual property. Suggestions for appropriate experimental design and forums for dissemination are reviewed. With planning and diligence, OBM research can potentially be a beneficial way to promulgate research practices as well as improve organizational functions.

Enhancing Supervisor Feedback Quality Using a Checklist, Performance Feedback, and Self-Monitoring

Effective supervisory skills, such as delivering corrective feedback, are essential for providing behavior-analytic services to vulnerable populations. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a training package designed to improve the quality of supervisory feedback through self-monitoring, a structured checklist, and researcher feedback. During the study, participants provided feedback to three staff behavioral profiles during role-play scenarios that may be encountered in clinical practice. Results indicated that feedback increased the participants’ self-monitoring accuracy scores and fidelity scores during role-play sessions. Three of five participants’ feedback delivery skills also generalized to a novel staff profile. Limitations and future implications of training supervisors to deliver quality feedback are reviewed.

Sustainability, Inclusion, and Negative Cultural Cusps

Sustainable development has become a mandatory agenda for all societies, and the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) summarize a consensus on actions and targets to be promoted in all environments (social, governmental, organizational, etc.). Under this consensus, however, cultural practices persist that harm or compromise the survival of vulnerable populations, such as the observed impacts of some renewable energy projects that result in forced displacement, or suppress the necessary living conditions for social and cultural reproduction. This article examines this issue and argues that the concept of sustainability, as supported in the SDGs, does not dispense with a commitment to the inclusion of vulnerable populations; on the contrary, it inescapably presupposes it. Ignoring inclusion as a necessary dimension of sustainability may lead to cultural practices that result in what the article proposes to label as negative cultural cusps.

Hair Practices Within Black Culture: Considerations for Behavior Analysts Serving the Black Community

Hair grooming is a culturally significant practice within the Black community. Over the years, some Black people have altered their hair care practices to meet the contingencies of the environment. For example, some Black people straightened their hair to assimilate to White societal standards, which may have led to more desirable financial and social outcomes. However, others refused and wore natural styles, such as afros, during the Civil Rights Movement, to signify resistance and resilience. Black hair has historically been a target for discrimination. Thus, it is important for behavior analysts who work with this population to understand the history and implications behind it, including how texturism, colorism, and internalized anti-Blackness interact and contribute to the development of both internal and explicit biases. This article discusses the history of Black hair and hair grooming practices from before, during, and after enslavement from a behavioral perspective. Considerations for behavior analysts providing services to Black clients will also be discussed. These considerations include: (1) gaining an understanding about medical mistrust within the Black community, (2) using a trauma-informed framework when serving Black clients, and (3) advocating for Black clients when hair discrimination is at work.

Editorial: Playing the Long Game: What Behavior Science Brings to the Resistance

In the United States and across the globe, democratic institutions are facing sustained threats, raising urgent questions about how resistance movements can organize and sustain collective action over long periods of time. In prior editorials, we have focused on providing strategies for individual behavior scientists to engage in nonviolent resistance. In this editorial, we expand that perspective to consider how behavior science can participate in the design, organization, and sustainability of resistance movements. Drawing from behavior analysis, behavioral systems analysis, culturo-behavioral systems science, and contextual behavior science, we examine how shared values, participation structures, leadership practices, and reinforcement systems can support long-term resistance efforts when terminal reinforcers are delayed and uncertain. We provide examples of how to create opportunities for participation along a continuum of risk levels, how psychological flexibility may contribute to committed action among participants, and structures that distribute leadership and reduce attrition. Research on resistance movements consistently shows that mobilization alone is insufficient. Durable change requires organization, reliable production of aggregate products, and sustained contact with selecting environments. We conceptualize resistance movements as behavioral systems that can be intentionally designed to increase participation, coordination, and persistence over time. As behavior scientists, we can contribute not only as researchers and consultants, but as participants who help design environments and organizations that make sustained collective action possible. The success of resistance movements is not a function of mobilization alone. It emerges when movements are intentionally designed to play the long game, cultivating the structures and practices necessary for sustained, adaptive, and enduring action.

Fear of Missing Out and Experiential Avoidance in the Virtualization of Everyday Life: A Scoping Review

With the incorporation of technologies into the social fabric, changes in people’s behaviors and lifestyles have been observed. Social networks have become widespread forces, a context in which Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) has emerged, a fear of missing out on a particu­lar event. Given this problem, it is worth reflecting on digital relationships. A Scoping Review was conducted using the SciELO, MEDLINE and LILACS databases and a final sample of ten studies was obtained. The aim was to investigate FOMO from the perspective of Behavioral Psychology, with a focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The aim was also to dis­cuss sociocultural aspects of the phenomenon and determine its relationship with self-esteem and dependence. A collectivist culture contributes to higher levels of FOMO and facilitates problematic use. Higher levels of FOMO arise with lower levels of self-esteem, and both self-esteem and FOMO showed a significant influence on time spent online. It was identified that virtual behavior is maintained by both positive and negative reinforcement, which would explain ambivalent use. FOMO expresses itself as cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance and incurs the loss of a meaningful life. Finally, this study reflected on the need for a more conscious use of technology.

Why Do Men Not Cry? A Behavioral-Contextual Perspective on the Impacts of Masculinity on Interpersonal Intimacy

In contemporary Western culture, male socialization processes tend to promote a normative model that establishes hierarchies of value and authority among men, reinforcing asymmetrical power relations as it legitimizes different forms of violence. Although this model provides access to certain social and symbolic privileges, conforming to hegemonic masculinity also brings adverse psychological and social consequences for men themselves. T he systematic suppression of vulnerable emotional responses and the difficulty in establishing intimate relationships are among its most directly observable outcomes. In this sense, the present study sought to describe the impact of masculinity norms on the development of intimate bonds and their possible consequences for men’s mental health. From a behavioralcontextual perspective, we delineate the concept of masculinity and functionally characterize intimacy in social relationships. By offering an initial theoretical account of the phenomenon, we expect this work to contribute to guiding future research and to promoting alternative ways of experiencing masculinity.
