Abstract Large language models (LLMs) are a type of AI (artificial intelligence). They are large-scale, sophisticated neural networks trained on vast amounts of text data to mimic human language. The increased adoption of LLMs warrants an analysis of their substantial, rapidly growing environmental footprint. This paper is structured in three broad sections. First, we offer a behavior-analytic lens into the rapidly increasing adoption of this technology. The analysis is provided at the individual, organizational, and cultural levels, with a discussion of efficiency gains being absorbed into productivity contingencies. Second, we provide a cradle-to-grave overview of the environmental impact of this technology: cradle (building the infrastructure), life (training and running the model), grave (disposal of electronic waste), and the potential infrastructure lock-in costs. The analysis includes a discussion of embedded carbon, an area often overlooked in discussions of environmental impacts. To close, we provide suggestions for behavior analysts at the individual level to the cultural level, with an emphasis on where leverage is most possible.

Abstract The professional practice of applied behavior analysis (ABA) has undergone substantial growth and professionalization in recent years. This growth has been accompanied by the development of a range of systems and organizations that support the profession (e.g., certification and licensure, professional and trade associations, healthcare billing systems). Although many practitioners interact with these elements on a regular basis, their broader role within the profession is not always well understood. The purpose of this article is to describe the core components of the infrastructure supporting the ABA profession. Understanding the functions of these systems may help practitioners better navigate their professional environment and contribute to the continued development of the profession.

While many practicing behavior analysts indicate that they would like to engage in research, there remain multiple barriers to service delivery organizations developing a functional research program. In addition to clinical research, ABA services have a unique opportunity to also bridge this gap with research in organizational behavior management (OBM). OBM applies behavior principles to organizations and their constituents. Research in this area has a long history of efficacy in human service organizations. However, there are many considerations to account for when running OBM research, many of which may differ from projects targeting clinical outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to outline guidance for running OBM research in ABA service delivery organizations. Some benefits of an OBM research program are described, as well as important considerations pertaining to organizational needs, provision of adequate resources, research infrastructure and teams. Unique ethical considerations when conducting OBM research in ABA settings are discussed, such as client welfare, employee voluntariness, and intellectual property. Suggestions for appropriate experimental design and forums for dissemination are reviewed. With planning and diligence, OBM research can potentially be a beneficial way to promulgate research practices as well as improve organizational functions.
